The Indonesian volcano Mount Sinabung erupted Monday on Sumatra Island, sending smoke and ash 16,400 feet into the sky. Nobody was killed or seriously hurt in the spectacular explosion, which left some bystanders covered in soot. The AP reports that most of the villages in the immediate area were already abandoned, and that villagers were warned to stay at least three miles away from the crater in advance of its eruption. Mount Sinabung was dormant for centuries before erupting in 2010 and staying extremely active since. Two people were killed in its 2010 eruption, with 16 dying in a 2014 explosion and seven more perishing in a 2016 blast.
