A Senate panel is postponing a vote on William Barr 's nomination as attorney general. It is a procedural delay and Barr is expected to be approved by the Republican-led Judiciary Committee with the vote likely happening next week. Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy believes Barr will get confirmed. Kennedy met with Barr yesterday and they talked about President Trump 's authority to declare a national emergency over the border wall.
California Democrat Dianne Feinstein cited concerns about a memo Barr wrote last year that was critical of the Russia investigation. She said Special Counsel Robert Mueller 's investigation should be completed "without filter." During his recent confirmation hearing, Barr said the memo was narrow in scope and challenged one aspect of the Russia investigation that involves obstruction of justice. He also acknowledged that he is not aware of where Mueller is focusing the investigation.
President Trump nominated Barr to replace fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions . Sessions was dismissed after November's midterm elections. Barr was also attorney general during the George H.W. Bush administration in the early 1990s.
