President Trump Attacks Kneeling NFL Players After Preseason Kicks Off

Miami Dolphins receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson kneel during the national anthem

The NFL preseason kicked off on Thursday (August 9) night and despite the league's effort to put an end to the controversy surrounding players kneeling during the national anthem, players continued to take a knee. President Donald Trump was not happy and took to Twitter to criticize the players. He sent out two tweets on Friday (August 10) morning telling players they "should be standing proudly for the National Anthem," and if they want to keep kneeling they should be "suspended without pay."

The NFL players are at it again - taking a knee when they should be standing proudly for the National Anthem. Numerous players, from different teams, wanted to show their “outrage” at something that most of them are unable to define. They make a fortune doing what they love...........Be happy, be cool! A football game, that fans are paying soooo much money to watch and enjoy, is no place to protest. Most of that money goes to the players anyway. Find another way to protest. Stand proudly for your National Anthem or be Suspended Without Pay!

In the offseason, the NFL enacted a new policy that would have banned players and staff from kneeling during the national anthem but gave them the option of remaining in the locker room. The NFL Players Association sued to stop the policy from being implemented and the league backed down. The two sides continue to have discussions as they try to come to a mutual agreement and put an end to the controversy.
