A Honolulu police officer was injured while trying to apprehend a suspected car thief Tuesday. The lieutenant was on his way to work when he tried to pull over a vehicle that made an illegal U-turn. The officer ran the license plate and the car was stolen. So he confronted the suspect in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven in Pearl City at about noon. Witnesses say the officer told the man to get out of the car and drew his weapon. The driver reversed, striking the officer, which caused his gun to go off. The officer was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Police later found the stolen car abandoned in Pearl City and they continue searching for the suspect.
