A 25-year-old Lihue man was killed when he crashed his pickup truck early Friday morning on Rice Street. It happened just before 4 a.m. when the man was traveling west on Rice Street and drifted off the road, sideswiping a utility pole and struck another car fronting the Kauai Museum. He was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was the sole occupant in the vehicle. Police shut down Rice Street between Haleko Road and Umi Street for three hours while they investigated the crash. This was Kauai's second traffic fatality for the year. On March 4, 29-year-old Samuel Mitzel of Anahola was killed in a crash in Kilauea after he was struck head on by a pickup truck. His father, a passenger in Mitzel's vehicle, is in critical condition at the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu.
