Residents in South Maui Friday complained about the "excessive" ash fallout from sugar cane fields burned by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company. Hawaii News Now is reporting resident Lyn Lopez took photos of the ash, which blanketed cars, sidewalks and the parking lot of the Kihei Villages Condominiums.  She posted the photos on The company said it burned a field off Mokulele Highway just outside Kihei at 4 a.m. and in a statement, HC & S General Manager Rick Volner said "While the wind conditions were good for harvesting this particular field, resulting in no smoke impacts to Kihei town, these same wind conditions resulted in the ash plume staying relatively close to the burn area, so there was heavier than usual ash fallout in that immediate area." The company apologized and asked for community patience during this harvesting period.
