The year-long H-1 rehabilitation project began Sunday with a complete shutdown of the highway's eastbound lanes from Likelike Highway to Ward Avenue, from 8 pm Sunday 4 a.m. Monday. The same stretch of highway will be closed again tonight from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday. Traffic was reportedly light during Monday night's closure. Because of the scope and duration of the project, the public has been given months of advance notice of the closure. Crews will be resurfacing the freeway, digging down 12 inches in some spots to fix the worst potholes. And, they'll be installing new lighting and drainage systems and adding a lane in both directions. Work is scheduled to be completed next July. Officials hope the new surface will last 12 to 15 years.
