The Coast Guard rescued a fisherman who spent Wednesday night adrift and out of gas off the coast of Kailua-Kona. An HC-130 Hercules plane from Air Station Barbers Point launched when the man was reported missing just after 6 p.m. Wednesday. The plane spotted the boat and the man waving his arms just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday. He was drifting about nine miles west of Kailua-Kona. The plane circled until a Coast Guard cutter arrived on scene and towed the boat to Keahou Marina. He was not injured. He was wearing a lifejacket, but was not equipped with a working VHF radio, flares and an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon.
