City Enforces New Sidewalk Nuisance Ordinance
Posted Monday, July 1st 2013 @ 1pm

Homeless campers who set up tents along Kalakaua Avenue near the Hawaii Convention Center this morning, were told to move, as the city began enforcing the new sidewalk nuisance law, which took effect today. Those told to move their belongings can retrieve the items if they pay a $200 fee.  Sidewalk nuisance is defined in the bill as "any object or collection of objects constructed, erected, installed, maintained, kept or operated on or over any sidewalk, including but not limited to stalls, stands, tents, furniture, and containers, and of their contents or attachments." The Convention Center operation included workers from the City Department of Facility Maintenance, U.S. Vets, Waikiki Health Clinic and IHS. Police assisted the effort.  The city said it will be conducting another sweep at a different location later today, but did not reveal where that would be.
