A 31-year-old Kona police officer last night shot a man in the shoulder who had threatened to kill himself with a rifle. It happened just after 9 p.m. on Manu Mele street in Kailua-Kona. The officer was responding to a report of an attempted suicide in progress at a home. Police ordered the man to put the weapon down, but he refused and tried to use the rifle to harm himself. That's when the eight-year veteran on the police force fired and hit the man in the shoulder. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. As is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting, criminal and administrative investigations into the shooting were initiated.
